the cosmic finger of friendship

For millenia, humans have wondered about the possibility of extraterrestrial lifeforms trying to communicate with us.

People have differed widely in their thoughts about exactly what form of communication would be used. In Close Encounters with the Third Kind, it was that creepy 'doo dii doo doo daaah' riff. For some unknown reason, people still think crop circles are messages from little green men. The movie Contact suggests that the most logical form of communication would be through mathematics. And in one of the miscellaneous Star Trek Next Gen movies, the Vulcans just stepped right off the ship and gave their wacky little five-fingered salute.

Well, the Hubble Telescope has found a little formation near the Keyhole Nebula that ends the speculation once and for all. Look in the top left hand corner of the image and you'll see that we've totally underestimated the ability of aliens to tell us, clearly and succinctly, what they really think of the planet Earth.
