nerdling knows that every good piece of science fiction tells us something about humanity. Some works encourage us to keep exploring the unknown and stretching our boundaries of knowledge. Others warn us of impending doom if we do not alter our ways as a civilisation. And others simply make us more aware, through allegory, of our own responsibilities to each other and to the planet, today.

And then there's Star Wars, from which we learn the message: everybody wants merchandise.

about the models

David Green is studying a PhD in space plasma physics at the University of Newcastle. In between studying and being the local computer guru, he finds time to work as a kite-surfing instructor and competes in the sport at a national level. He has a black belt in several martial arts. The equations on the board are his own.

Manya Sklodovska is currently employed as a physicist by the Australian CRC for Satellite Systems. She recently graduated from the University of Newcastle after immigrating from Eastern Europe, and divides her time between space physics and performance poetry. She has performed her work in locations as diverse as the Sydney Opera House and Wilcannia, and her new poetry collection is due to be published in Australia this autumn.
