I worked during my first university summer vacation as a bridge-and-gantry crane driver in an aluminium smelter. I drove one of two 50 meter wide, 200-tonne cranes for three months.

It was just great. The cabin was a little clear glass box slung under the belly of the crane with a big rotating chair in the middle of it. You could look through the glass floor at the ground about six feet below you and feel like you were hovering around in a UFO. The very ends of the 200-meter-long shed dropped down by about two storeys, so when you drove the crane right up the end if felt like you were driving off a precipice. Yeah!
